IoC Qualifications

IoC Qualifications (40)

Qualifications in the Logistics sector

IOC Chair, Carl Lomas,

Qualifications are key to our sector, both for compliance and future workforce, from driver front line to management. The IOC have been working closely with FE colleges, Universities, LEPs and BIS

IOC has two key qualification routes, management & delivery. For management, IOC is working with Derby University & London Met University to develop the first ever undergraduate degree dedicated to our sector. For delivery teams IOC are looking at the apprenticeship replacement qualifications with work on an apprenticeship trailblazer for same day and home delivery couriers. The ‘Courier Trailblazer’  was a phase three application and evolved into ‘Trailblazer Express Delivery’, the standard submitted to BIS for Nov 26th 2015, a framework for delivery is in development. Employer support came from APC to Yodel, nationals from UK Mail to SMEs such as Swift in Liverpool and Rush in London. Awarding bodies supporting are Pearson Edexcell and City & Guilds. IOC attends the AELP (association of education and learning provider) sector meetings.

The sector is unique with extensive compliance training and testing, from hazardous goods handling to licence. Driver shortage issues are log jammed around test centres with 12 week diaries for tests (2015). The LEP 2016 European funding may be the next solution to needs around support for the next generation of workforce. The schools message for the next generation is key, taking the message of our sector as a career path. IOC have worked very closely with FE, from West Thames College GTA at Heathrow to Buxton & Leek with their Skillbase driver training centre in the homeland of Sec of State for transport Patrick Mcloughlin.

An ocean of space, painted shades of blue, 21m tall, speculatively built on the M1 Middle England corridor at the heart of exploding e-retail.

IOC maintained its influence on the work of Local Enterprise Partnerships in the last week of March.  As an active member of the SEMLEP Logistics Forum we contributed to an event at the Altitude building at Magna Park in Milton Keynes.

SEMLEP is viewed by government as the most effective of the LEPs and other LEPS are adopting their ideas on employer engagement and implementation of local growth plans.  In the SEMLEP area, logistics employs nearly 100,000 people, so IOC's work with SEMLEP ensures the needs of the Express Delivery sector are to the fore in their plans.

Discussion in the Forum – attended by employers, local councils, training organisations and academics from nearby Cranfield University -  covered career pathways for young people and ways to promote apprenticeships in the sector.

Mike Brown opened the Friday morning event with group focus on how TfL can work in partnership with the freight industry and business community to deliver the Mayor’s Transport Strategy (MTS).

Big final mile players in the room - Hermes, DPD & DHL among the final mile folk - Ocado & John Lewis.

Exploding express, a third of all transport today is final mile and it was well represented.

Academics from Westminster and Sheffield.

Heavy truck folk talked parking tickets dominating but real focus was on Mayor's Transport Strategy; find an easy link to the new document on the IOC web.

IOC chair of electric vehicle group, Sam Clarke is looking at green beyond the power train.

Gnewt Cargo is participating in a trial to investigate whether ‘parcel porters’ could help reduce carbon emissions from delivery vans.

Researchers from four universities are delivering the project, in which porters will meet with van drivers at the kerbside and receive pre-prepared bags of parcels to deliver to homes and offices on foot.

It is expected that this could reduce the amount of time vans spend out on delivery, thus improving local air pollution due to the decreased mileage per round.

Whistl, the big orange postal machine, has announced that Fabiola Sharratt is to join the company on 3 April as Operations Director and will sit on the Executive Board.

Fabiola was Group Operations Director at the British e-commerce company, The HUT, which is Europe’s fastest growing health and beauty online retailer.

The IOC was on hand as LoCity opened their Fuels In Action roadshow today at Kempton Park racecourse.

A rich mix of alternative fuel providers and users were there to advise future fuel best practice and recount early-days experience with the current crop of alt-fuel tech.

A full house; five hundred registered guests at the Heathrow logistics hot-spot. An explanation of all things clean air for the pending ULEZ regs, April 2019. Alternative fuels is an answer to clean air, but driver training and consolidating deliveries is also the answer.

There was a big speaker line-up; three parallel seminars, all opened by TRL, the govt's Transport Research Laboratory. Operator speakers then took charge to talk real world experience of the new style vehicles. CitySprint spoke about refuelling hydrogen and new IOC fellow Jacquie O'Donovan talked about getting the most miles out of electric in the cold weather with the heaters on.

Americans talk of Mother's Day starting in 1914. Anna Jarvis resolved to honour the death of her mother in 1908. Her mother’s wish was that someone would one day pay tribute to all mothers. Anna is reported to have written hundreds of letters to officials before she gained the support of the Philadelphian merchant John Wanamaker. Mother's Day became an official U.S. holiday in 1914.

Here in the UK, Mother's Day marks the second logistics peak of the year. Valentines broke all records and today's numbers will likely do the same as final mile home delivery continues to explode. Based in the heart of flower final mile, like Valentine's, the breadth of deliveries has widened beyond all expectations.
