Defining groups of logistics Service Providers LSPs for final mile, last mile express courier to door.

Institute of Couriers (IoC) has drafted a map of the UK Logistics Service provider (LSP) resource groups for final mile, last mile delivery to door.

The map outlines clarity of those networks able to trunk internally, (in the upper triangle) and those networks who outsource their trunking (in the lower triangle). Company names listed are as example and do not provide a definitive list.

During the 2020 Covid-19 crisis the Institute of Couriers facilitated communications to match owner-operators to national players. A demonstration of the IOC reach is shown in the diagram below.

Myth Busting for Express Logistics

Fellows' six headlines to bust the myths of perception of delivery to door.

- Volume exceeds weight, packaging is light, a van is full of express goods long before the load is overweight.

- A cardboard box does not protect fragility. Fragile items need extensive wrap protection. ‘Don’t just pop them in a box!

- Clients do not want an out-of-hours knock at the door, typical delivery hours are between eight AM and nine PM. Express delivery is generally daylight hours.

- Express drivers rarely travel long distances - A driver in a high density urban area walks further than they driver during a delivery round. Average mileage driven in Westminster by a courier van is seven miles a day.

- Many Express drivers are self-employed; couriers are challenged by  'Right to Work' checks here.

- Express Logistics does deliver to every address in the UK, 65 billion deliveries a year to door in UK. 2025 door count in the UK circa 40 million, population almost 70 million.
