Preface By Vice Chancellor University of West London, Prof Peter John CBE
During the 1980s Express logistics was a sector that people just found themselves in. However, the advent and rapid growth of internet-generated sales created demand for a new breed of logistics professionals; those who are able to locate and transport goods to precise and demanding delivery specifications. As a result, there is today a stairway of qualifications that can be accessed from driver and sortation to manager and executive, all of which can lead to a degree level credential and more.
The Express Delivery Manager Hons degree apprenticeship standard sets out the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to become a fully competent Express Delivery Manager in the technology-led, fast-paced, 24/7 world of express sortation operations. These are not the traditional skills of warehouse management and vehicle fleet management, but the skills of data analysis, key performance indicator management, real time dynamic business planning, time-critical decision making, and innovation in route planning. This is no longer a sector that people just find themselves in. It is one which is aspirational and rich in opportunity for those who wish to follow a career stairway approach from learning foundations to management and beyond.
This textbook fills a significant gap in the literature for logistics, knowledge, skills, and behaviours for express logistics professionals. I am sure this edition will prove to be the ‘go to’ foundational text for those who wish to study, understand, and learn the broad spectrum of logistics with a clear focus on the final mile delivery to door.
For each chapter, the learning knowledge, skill and behaviour unit criteria (KSB’s) of the apprenticeship standard are used as sub headers and indexed to the learning material. A dedicated final chapter then reviews the behaviour units. Exercise tasks are listed in the learning material of each chapter aligned to the apprenticeship degree learning. Case studies are placed toward the end of each chapter from a broad group of transport final mile operators. Focused on learning, each chapter ends with an assessment task based on learning outcomes (LOs), the LOs are also sub indexed into the chapter text as signposts for assessment during the learning.
Index from the apprenticeship standard criteria units currently remains in for mapping. Knowledge & Skills (K&S) and units for Behaviour are placed in a final chapter. EDM Duties (D) index from the apprenticeship is in the chapter subheadings. (T) units are thread continuities to bridge the academic and apprenticeship learning units. A set of appendices conclude the learning text covering mapping and index of the apprenticeship standard, listing first, the duty list from the sector Trailblazer group of Skills England. The sector GVPPI numbers and other appropriate detail are included as toolbox material for the Express manager in daily work environment of achieving customer promise in delivery to the door. There is a glossary of terms at the end of the textbook.
