We are here to recognise what has been accomplished, the progress made, the effort of all of the road safety work. To be ambitious at where next. Vision Zero 2, is a step forward with learning and an ever changing city. People should feel safe crossing the road, where walking doesn't require bravery. London has reduced road injuries faster than the rest of the country. In real terms our city, vision zero has saved more than 250 lives. Examples include, lowering speeds, 21 boroughs have 20mph on 75% of their roads. Vision Zero demands honesty, our work is not yet done, people behind the numbers, those still injured are too many.

Brake road safety charity - Too many stories, the importance of post-crash care.

Dr Jami Blythe, Brake, the road safety charity, ‘A bold vision, a vision of zero for road safety accidents, no one killed or injured. Every year 100 people are still killed on London roads. 1700 in the UK’ Dr Jami delivered a case study of the change of life for a victim of road traffic. ‘A neighbour knocks on the door to say their son has just been knocked off their bike, their son killed, no goodbye – Post crash care is needed.’ Lives are changed. ‘No loss of life on the road is acceptable, we need safe systems at the core, Vision Zero must place the stories of victim injuries at our hearts, hold decision-makers to account.

Seb Dance Deputy Mayor for Greater London Authority GLA

Why Vision Zero is Important

20mph is five times safer than 30mph

Seb Dance the deputy mayor, (Sadiq Khan - NO ONE will be killed on London roads by 2041,) ‘We are making great progress since 2015. We are seeing a rise in e-bikes, the emergence of autonomous vehicles, we cant ignore change, we must make use of the change. We will invest at least 150million a year to road safety, we will increase crossing numbers, we will continue to lower speeds on the London Road Network LRN and encourage boroughs to follow. A person hit by a vehicle at 30mph is five times more likely to be killed than one travelling at 20mph. We need collaboration between TFL, London boroughs and police force. Safer streets are about safer behaviours, these behaviours must be challenged, The Met Police is the solution, high visibility patrols to help us deliver Vision Zero.

Road safety is not just people its also about how we build our streets. We must have a system that is resilient, safe streets, safe speeds, safe vehicles and a post-collision response. ‘Vision Zero two is designed for delivery with clear view of speed, street and safety for all.’

Vision Zero Action Plan 2

Collaboration is key to achieving Vision Zero. We are setting up a vision zero oversight group. It’s more than safety, it’s about a thriving city. Vision Zero launched in 2018, we have delivered reduced harm, safer streets, safer vehicles. HGV and the direct vision standard has become a world standard. All vehicles are becoming safer because of DVS in London. We track progress, London is getting safer, faster than the rest of UK, we have fewer daytime deaths than Paris and New York. Deaths are clearly trending down. Vision Zero is making London a road civilised City. The goal to zero road incidents is audacious. To get to zero we need to do new things, deal with new technologies. There are risks developing with e-bikes. Cars remain the prevalent vehicles on London roads. Tackling speed remains the number one priority! Tackling emerging trends, car spreading, vehicles are getting larger. For cycling there has been a growth of 57% in cycle trips in London. We need to encourage safety for the emerging e-bikes, both ridding them and the fire risk of their batteries.

Working with partners to address work related road risk, FORS and CLOCS have been key to standards.
