IOC were at the January Guildhall meeting of a well-attended London Road Safety Council meeting. First agenda item was DfT Road Safety Strategy and the council set an action to complete consultation on the new roads strategy by the end of March deadline. LRSC had a presentation from TfL on the new Business Plan with talk of ten mph drops in the speed limits. LRSC Executive team explained web site has been updated - it's worth a look.
Nicola Christey delivered the summary on DfT Road Safety Strategy discussion. Explaining the nature of consultation for the new strategy and the deadline for such consultation set at March 31st. Context in the discussion included - London has more dedicated traffic police than rest of UK. A third of casualties on the road are those driving for work. All evidence shows 20mph saves lives. Key notes included Safe Systems approach, promotion of partnerships. Work-related road safety charter aimed clearly at commercial working individuals on the road. Discussion around the consultation nature of the new strategy, alcohol levels and implications to disable vehicle, seat belts, trailers. Looking at the data measures. Nicola explained the lagging measure KPIs, things that have already happened, while only a few leading measures in the KPIs, predicting what is going to happen.
Kerry Mehan from TfL updated LRSC on the latest TfL Business Plan about to be published. Speed limits discussed, Helsinki got a mention. - Transport for London Road Network, TLRN discussion moved to Speed limits. Borough engagement has been delivered in the new plan, There will be a further borough stakeholder event in the summer. Kerry added, ‘TRLN Transport for London road networks, the red routes’ - Lowering speed limits. Phase three very soon, a programme to lower speeds on 15km of roads by ten mph. Croydon, Sutton, Islington amongst the programme. Looking at different practices, Helsinki proportional fines got a mention. New Met plan for policing London roads was explained.
