Hermes has just secured planning consent to build a state-of-the-art automated parcel distribution hub located in Barnsley.

All green, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuelled vehicles will be based at the hub and there will be provision for electric cars.

The proposals for the massive £60m development were approved by Barnsley Council’s planning committee. It's to be called Colossus.

Due for completion in 2022, the development will be the largest of its kind in Europe and will create around 1,300 new jobs in the area.

It will be located in Sheffield Road, Hoyland, and up to 800 people will work on site during shifts.

The 360,000 sq ft facility, named Colossus, will initially process 1.3 million parcels daily, boosting the company’s overall capacity to 3.8 million a day.

Hermes’ application features 298,700 sq. ft of warehousing, a three-storey office block, parking spaces for 650 cars, 595 HGVs, 150 tractors and 60 cycle storage spaces.

To future-proof and prepare for expected growth, further tiers will be added to the hub in coming years.
