Apprenticeship Trailblazer Phase Three Application for Courier Sector
Employers commit to Courier Apprenticeship 1st August 2014
A large group of leading courier and logistics companies are working together to develop a new 'Trailblazer Apprenticeship' for the sameday sector.
In a letter submitted to Government today by Justin Moore, Director of City Sprint, more than a dozen employers committed to work together to set the standards and agree the details for the new programme. They are joined by the Institute of couriers and aim to support young people coming into the industry this innovative apprenticeship will provide the business and entrepreneurial skills for those wanting work as self-employed couriers as well as the practical knowledge and skills required to provide timed delivery services to business and domestic customers.
Justin Moore commented:
I'm honoured to have been asked to chair this group of employers who come from a cross section of our industry - my own company has engaged more than ninety apprentices, from nationals like City Link & UK Mail to niche operators such as GLH & Rush. I've been encouraged by the positive reception our initial ideas received from the 'Trailblazer' team in the Dept. of Business Innovation and Skills and we look forward to working with them in the coming months. I've asked the Institute of Couriers to join the group to help us develop common standards and ensure the apprenticeship links with the work they are doing to create degree level courses in Universities around the country.
The plans in place will see the first new apprenticeship starting work in the second half of 2015 as they start a programme that will last around 18 months. The rapid rise in the proportion of courier operations carried out by self-employed drivers has been a feature of the recovery of the market since the 2008 recession. Traditional qualifications and apprenticeship training programmes do not provide a route for young people or adults to gain the skills needed to operate efficiently and effectively as a self-employed courier. Micro business knowledge to act as a self employed or franchise courier is key to the employer request for the new qualifications.
Also supporting the trailblazer are Institute of Couriers, IOC chair Carl Lomas comments,
As we see retail shift from high street to home delivery there has never been so many new challenges for the courier, the trailblazer should deliver knowledge to candidates facing ever different client challenges as our B2B work moves to homes, adding technology of location, GPS and signature acquisition for delivery proof reaching cutting edge like we have never seen before.
