Seventies Courier bike flames on the board to celebrate the golden era of Sameday London dispatch.

2014 news jul 1

IOC president Lord Falkland was at the ancient guild ceremony of cartmarking. July 16th at Guild Hall Yard, City of London.

Institute of Couriers classic Honda CX500 series one bike was honoured with parade place Zero Zero ONE to open the ceremony.

The ceremony of cartmarking saw the classic courier bike head at the front of fifty commercial vehicles branded with a year licence letter, this ancient ceremony then allows those vehicles branded to ply for trade in the city of London in the old school of the guilds dating back five hundred years. Branding the vehicles this year was the Lord mayor of the City of London, Fiona Woolf and the ceremony took place in the pageantry of Guild Hall Yard with a run of IOC fellows on hand to celebrate the event.

Classic courier bike was fully loaded with panniers and top box, even a delivery strapped on the seat. The bike was dressed in colours of the eighties iconic courier companies, Delta, GLH, Mercury, Pony Express, Security Despatch & even a modern day DHL box on the seat.

The Honda CX500 was a series one model first registered 1978, a restored working bike with one hundred and twenty six thousand miles on the clock, the CX shaft drive machine had a reputation for reliability and it never missed a beat in the hot sunshine of Guildhall yard. The V twin motor blurbeled across the yard with IOC chairman Carl Lomas at the helm to meet Lord Mayor Fiona Woolf who stamped it with the year letter W.

Institute of Couriers met ANCO, ANCO is the Association of Nigerian Courier Operators - a Nigerian Institute of Couriers.

Vivian Okeke of TransRoyal Couriers in Lagos explained the Nigerian courier infrastructure at a meeting in London. Vivian reported,

Association of Nigerian Courier Operators (ANCO) is the leading trade and professional body for the industry in Nigeria with over 100 member companies.  ANCO's  mission is to professionalise the industry and replace the current Nipost (Nigerian Post Office) licencing system with a fully independent, industry-backed scheme.  At present 370 companies are licenced but ANCO members are unhappy with the weak enforcement and low credibility of the scheme which is damaging the industry in Nigeria.  Nipost licences currently cost $12,000 for initial licence with a $2,000 annual fee. ANCO are seeking IOC assistance to develop a training and qualifications offer for the sector aimed to attract young people and support adults who want to work in the sector.
